Some time ago, Network Arts member Phil Baird was a patient on the Ladywell Unit. While he was there, he was involved in an activity on the ward to design a mural for the Unit. Phil’s design was chosen as the best but unfortunately, there was no funding to actually paint the mural. Then in 2007, the Trust invited applications for a funding opportunity called “Can Money Buy You Happiness?” A category within this was ‘Improving the environment’ and Phil saw this as his opportunity for the mural to come to life. Phil was successful in his bid, and in April 2008, in collaberation with Network Arts, he began planning the mural. After meeting with Nick Caswell, Johnson ward manager, a schedule was agreed and work started..........
In groups of 4-5 people, Network Arts members began painting...........................................
Within three weeks, the mural was completed!!
Not only does it look incredible, it has transformed the garden area of the Johnson Unit, making it a more interesting, brighter and therapeutic space. Feedback from staff and patients has been nothing but positive and Phil as well as other members of Network Arts who worked on the project are justifiably proud of the work they’ve produced.
