Current Installation - Sept 09

Wednesday evening 16th September 2009 saw the launch of a fantastic new exhibition by members of Network Arts Lewisham on the walls and corridors of Dr Ben Kawooya’s practice on Lee High Rd.

Network Arts is an arts project for residents of Lewisham with mental health support needs that has been running at various locations within the borough for the last thirteen years. Currently based at the Lee Centre, it offers members the opportunity to try out any number of different art forms and the chance for people to explore their creativity in a supportive, friendly environment.

However, much to the distress of current members, under current proposals by South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, the project is under threat of closure. Jaydeane Hall, a current member of Network Arts there on the night said, “This project is what keeps me going. I know that without it’s support I’d be in hospital. It’s like a family here and we all support each other.”

But putting the worries and anxieties for the project’s future aside for the evening, It was a night of celebration and a chance for the group to show exactly why they’re determined to keep the project going. Among the large turnout, a number of Councillors were there to enjoy the artwork and support the project.

Cllr Chris Maines, leader of the Liberal Democrats in Lewisham spoke, saying that he knew the project was going through a difficult period, but with Lewisham Councils support he hoped that this time next year the project would be stronger and better than ever.

The exhibition continues for the next six months and is free to view within surgery opening times.
